Specialized Supports

Specialized Supports provides supports and services to both children and adults. Specialized supports are grounded in Positive Approaches; person-centered values; a commitment to outcomes which are meaningful from the perspective of a person’s preferred lifestyle; a reliance on individualized, functional assessment; and an appreciation of the fact that difficult behaviours result from unmet needs. Difficult behaviours are messages which can tell us important things about the person and the quality of his or her life. People with difficult behaviours are often missing:

  • Meaningful relationships
  • A sense of safety and well-being
  • Power
  • Things to look forward to
  • A sense of value and self-worth
  • Relevant skills and knowledge
  • Supporters who are themselves supported

Services Include:

  • Mediator training (families, group living, schools)
  • Consultations
  • Community Education
  • Individual Assessments
  • Relaxation Exercises
  • Behaviour Support Plan Development
  • Communication supports
  • Relationship group
  • Co-operative Communication Training
  • Referral to community resources for Speech, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language services

Network of Specialized Care provides assistance to people who have an intellectual disability and co-existing mental health concerns and/or challenging behaviours that may seriously affect their quality of life. Through the use of video conferencing equipment and face to face consultation we are able to consult with a variety of specialized clinical services throughout the North to assist in providing training, education and discuss options for treatment in a timely manner.

Specialized Accommodations provides time limited support and short term treatment for those people experiencing difficulty in their current environment. Support can be provided in the person’s home or in a community apartment. This support is available in Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma District.

Referrals to access the North Community of Specialized Care and Specialized Accommodations can be made by people and/or their family members, community agencies and CLA staff by contacting the Manager of Specialized Services at Community Living Algoma.

Video Conferencing/Training can be accessed by anyone interested in learning about a wide variety of topics such as Aging and Intellectual Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Planning and Wills for Families, etc. Sessions can be viewed live or may be accessed later from the archives on-line. Please contact the office for current web address.
